To get the full benefits, think about a goal – otherwise known as a sankalpa, to have in mind for this session. Holding an awareness of a goal you’d like to achieve, short permission based statements such as “I am allowed to relax” or “I am healthy happy and relaxed” help to bring the thought into your belief system allowing it to become your reality.
I was first introduced to Yoga Nidra 22 years ago. As a young mother of 3 small children I struggled to relax and found the technique difficult and confronting. All these years later, it has become an essential in managing conflict, tension, and loads of life challenges. The practice is one is which there is no movement, and generally lasts between 20 – 45 minutes. The practice brings about deep relaxation as well as connecting with an aspect of ourselves we often ignore.
One of the powerful elements of Yoga Nidra is creating a Sankalpa otherwise known as a resolve. Take some time to select your Sankalpa and stick with it until you’ve attained it. I had one for 20 years and was astonished when I realised I had actually attained it after all those years. Short, clear and positive statements such as:
“I will achieve total health”
“I will be successful in all I do”
“I will relax”
The idea is that by sticking to your Sankalpa you will anchor this resolve into your belief system and allow time for your whole body to fully embrace it. Do not chop and change. Learning your Sankalpa as a mantra and using it silently throughout the day helps. Your results of course will be dependant on your sincerity and deeply you wish to attain your Sankalpa. It is said that the one thing in life that won’t ever let you down is your Sankalpa.
At first, don’t try to go too deep into the practice. Just allows yourself to spontaneously relax and let the chatter of the mind become like a radio and simply observe it. If you need to wriggle do so, if you need to yawn or even snooze a bit that’s ok too. Remember this is a new experience and one you want to develop over time. Let me know what you think of it ok? All I ask is that you allow yourself 10 minutes to experience this deep relaxation to replenish your vitality and to restore your confidence.
