When was the last time you gave yourself permission to be grateful for your first world problems? In countries like Australia, the UK and US, we can easily fall in to finding fault and laying blame for things that are often in our control let alone stuff that’s out of our control. Yes, that’s right, I said, we can find fault and lay blame for things that are within and outside of our control.

Now things that are outside our control are exactly that. But people seriously, when did you last stop and think about what’s within your control to change?

Most people have the capacity to make choices, and for a variety of reasons, either consciously, subconsciously or unconsciously, choose not to. I know this for a fact, because aside from the truck loads of research, I used to do exactly that. And why? It’s easier. See, it requires conscious effort and energy to choose to take responsibility for our own thoughts, feelings and behaviours. And a willingness to step up and stop blaming.

Giving ourselves permission to make mistakes and learn from them paves the pathway to gratitude. When I look back on some of the monumental stuff ups I’ve made in my life, I can acknowledge how grateful I’ve been for the learning along the way. What about you? Do you cringe when you think about mistakes you’ve made or have you built a buffer around them and carved them up in to lessons? If you’re still in the thick of pain and shame, blame and suffering, why not get a grip on gratitude? I’m happy to help and at your service.
